After decades of riding and racing dirt bikes in the desert, I’ve learned that tire choice can make or break your day. For dirt bikes, I always looked for a super-hard rear tire that could handle high-speed abuse without chunking knobs in rocky terrain, and a front tire soft enough for responsive steering but tough enough to survive the desert.
UTV tires follow similar rules, except most use the same tread pattern front and rear. That means you need a tire that fits your terrain while offering durability to last a season or two—especially since good UTV tires can be pricey, often well over $200 each.

My Experience with UTV Tires
On my earlier side-by-sides, I ran quad-style tires—smaller but surprisingly tough. I only punctured one once, and after plugging it, it became the longest-lasting tire I’ve ever had.
But on my RZR Pro R, the stock Maxxis tires were more like small truck tires—and they were more vulnerable to sidewall punctures. On my first two trips to Mammoth, I suffered flats from sharp rocks piercing the sidewalls—something that had never happened to me there before.
After the second flat, I knew it was time for an upgrade.

Why I Chose the System 3 XC450
Research and rider feedback led me to the System 3 XC450. What caught my attention was the 10-ply rating—most competitors offer only 8-ply tires. In theory, that should mean more durability and fewer punctures.
At just over $200 each, they weren’t cheap, but when they arrived, I was impressed:
o Aggressive tread lugs for maximum grip.
o Noticeable weight difference from the Maxxis tires.
o Built to handle horsepower without excessive flex.

First Impressions on the Trail
On my first ride in Northern Nevada, I felt the difference immediately. The System 3 XC450 tires were stiffer, which actually helped my Fox suspension handle bumps more effectively. Compared to the stock tires, they offered a more controlled ride and inspired confidence heading into my annual Mammoth trip.
However, there was a trade-off—at 15 PSI, washboard roads felt brutally harsh. Midweek, I dropped a pound of pressure, which helped slightly but still delivered a stiff ride. That’s the price you pay for 10-ply toughness.

The Unwelcome Surprise
The tires performed flawlessly—until the last day. I returned to camp satisfied, only to find the right rear flat ten minutes later. No obvious puncture was visible. At home, a soap-and-water test revealed the smallest hole I’ve ever seen in a tire.
Whether it was a manufacturing defect or a tiny sharp object from the ride back to camp, I’m not sure. I replaced the tire but kept the old one as an emergency backup.

Final Verdict on the System 3 XC450
The System 3 XC450 is a durable, high-traction 10-ply UTV tire well-suited for rocky trails, desert riding, and mountain terrain.
Pros:
o Aggressive tread for excellent grip.
o 10-ply construction for added durability.
o Works well with RZR Pro R suspension.
Cons:
o Stiffer ride on washboard terrain.
o Slightly higher cost per tire.
o One unexplained puncture (may have been a fluke).
At around $200+ each, they’re a solid investment for riders who prioritize traction and toughness over comfort. I’ll know more about long-term reliability after my next Mammoth trip—but so far, I’m impressed.
