If you ride in areas with heavy dust, upgrading your air filter is worth considering. I’ve always leaned toward aftermarket filters — manufacturers supply filters that get the job done, but aftermarket options usually take performance and protection further.

In the past, I’ve gone with off-road specific filters, but this time I decided to try a K&N. I’ve used K&N on several of my vehicles over the years with good results, so I figured I’d see how it performs on my RZR.

Right out of the box, the first thing I noticed was that the K&N is larger than the stock filter. That’s a plus since more surface area means better airflow, and better airflow usually translates to better engine performance. The filter element itself feels sturdy, with a thick layer of protection. Interestingly, even though this model wasn’t advertised as oiled, it had a light coating. That helps trap fine particles but also means you’ll need to stay on top of cleaning — something I’m already used to from dirt bike filters. After long, dusty rides, you’ll just need to clean it more often.
I haven’t put it through a full test yet, but I’ll be heading down to Mammoth, CA next week. That area’s fine dust should be a perfect test of how well it holds up. My expectation is that it will outperform the stock filter, and I’ll share an update once I’m back.

On a related note, I also run an RPM Pre-Filter on my RZRs. These slip right over the main filter and act as a first line of defense against fine dust. They’re inexpensive, easy to install, and add some extra peace of mind.

Between the K&N filter and the RPM Pre-Filter, I see this as a solid upgrade compared to pricey particle filter systems that often require modifications to your side-by-side.
