The Vegas to Reno off-road race festivities kick off today! For those who aren’t familiar, the Vegas to Reno Race in Nevada is one of the largest Baja-style off-road events in the U.S. It started roughly 35 years ago as a dirt bike race and has since grown to include just about every kind of four-wheel vehicle—side-by-sides included.

I’ve attended a couple of these races as a spectator, usually catching the action near the end of the course about 50 miles outside Reno. Watching the Trophy Trucks, Group 4 Ultras, and side-by-sides thunder down dusty roads and tear through sand washes is an experience like no other.

Today is qualifying at Jean Dry Lakebed, just outside Jean, Nevada, and the main race runs August 15th all the way to Reno. If you’re looking for some high-speed action, find a spot along the route, bring a lawn chair and an umbrella (it’s hot out there!), and enjoy the show.
